Texto para parcial 3 série médio

Adolescent Depression: Helping depressed teens

It's not unusual for young people to experience "the blues" or feel "down in the dumps" occasionally. Adolescence is always an unsettling time, with the many physical, emotional, psychological and social changes that accompany this stage of life.
Unrealistic academic, social, or family expectations can create a strong sense of rejections and can lead to deep disappointment. When things go wrong at schools or at home, teens often overreact. Many young people feel that life is not fair or that things "never go their way." They feel "stressed out" and confused. To make matters worse, teens are bombarded by conflicting messages from parents, friends and society. Today's teens see more of what life has to offer - both good and bad - on television, at school, in magazines and on the Internet. They are also forced to learn about the threat of AIDS, even if they are not sexually active or using drugs.
Teens need adult guidance more than ever to understand all the emotional and physical changes they are experiencing. When teens' moods disrupt their ability to function on a day-to-day basis, it may indicate a serious emotional or mental disorder that needs attention - adolescent depression. Parents or caregivers must take action.
Depressions can be difficult to diagnose in teens because adults may expect teens to act moody. Also, adolescents do not always understand or express their feelings very well. They may not be aware of the symptoms of depression and may not seek help.

SHOPAHOLICS
(1) What are the warning signs of compulsive shopping? There is still very little known about compulsive spenders.
(2) "A compulsion is the uncontrollable need to do something. The individual is overwhelmed by the desire to do very stupid things in order to reduce anxiety", psychiatrists say. "The tension is there, and even though they recognize that what they do may be ridiculous, they do it anyway."
(3) Researchers estimate that as many as 10 million Americans are compulsive shoppers, with a growing number of people addicted to home-shopping catalogs and TV-shopping services.
(4) A compulsive shopper told a researcher that she could never go to a supermarket and buy just one bottle of milk. It had to be two. Why? "I'd been brought up to please everybody," she said. "So I thought I was pleasing the store."
(5) To help anxious shopaholics, who often wind up with major financial and personal difficulties, researchers at several universities in the United States are working on a variety of therapeutic approaches, from behavior modification to experiments with a drug used to treat such obsessions as ritualized hand-washing.
(6) Psychiatrists and social scientists have various theories as to why people engage in compulsive behavior. Shopaholics, they suggest, could be sexually frustrated, might suffer from lack of self-esteem, or they may just have a neurotic reaction to television commercials and glossy advertisements.
(7) "Often, there is a background of emotional problems such as anxiety, depression, substance abuse and mood disorders," says Dr. Donald Black, a professor of psychiatry at the University of Lowe College of Medicine. Though over shoppers later experience considerable remorse, they "find shopping exciting. They think about doing it. They fantasize about the selecting and the purchasing. They have closets full of clothing they don't wear, but feel embarrassed about returning items. They go into a store for a specific, such as a shampoo, and come out with $100 worth of goods."
(8) Who needs help? "If you have had clothes for six months and haven't taken the tags off," one compulsive shopper recently suggested, "you probably need to evaluate what you are doing."

STOP CIRCUS CRUELTY

1. The circus paints a picture of happy animals doing tricks because they like to. 2. The fact is, that animals in circus endure pain and abuse for the sake of entertainment. In nature, bears don't ride bicycles, elephants don't stand on their heads, and a tiger would never hop on his hind legs. To force wild animals to perform these silly acts, trainers use whips, muzzles, electric prods and bullhooks. The circus forces them to perform night after night, for 48 to 50 weeks every year. Between acts, elephants are kept in chains and tigers are stored in cages with barely enough room to take one step. Ringling has also invented a "unicorn" by mutilating a baby goat and surgically having his horns to the center of his forehead.
Most elephants used by circuses were captured in the wild. Once removed from their families and natural habitat, their lives consist of little more than chains and intimidation. Baby elephants born in breeding farms are torn from their mothers, tied with ropes and kept in isolation until they learn to fear their trainers. In order to 3. TAME them, they are "broken". Some trainers have used bulldozers to get the chained elephants attention ... to teach them a lesson. Sometimes the elephants die, but never quickly. It takes a long time for an animal the size of an elephant to die and sometimes the elephants don't die ... Here is a picture of an unnamed three-year-old elephant, chained, pulled, confined in an unnatural position, denied food, water, shelter, dignity, beaten with bullhooks, baseball bats, iron bars and wooden axe handles. I hate that this happens and I hate this picture but sometimes a picture wakes our emotions enough to wake us up to what's going on around us.

THE ECOLOGICAL PROBLEM
Scientists speculate upon the consequences of man's interference with the natural world in which he lives. And they sound the alarm at our irresponsible destruction. But men rarely listen to these warnings - or, if they listen, they even more rarely act.
Every day we witness the unthinking actions men take which interfere, sometimes which disastrous consequences, with the natural actions of the environment. We use various pesticides on our farms which sometimes leave dead birds along with bigger tomatoes. We toss the refuse from our industries into our lakes with solutions which spoil our drinking water and despoil our swimming water. We sail along our highways dropping cans and bottles on their surfaces and spreading polluted air all about. We commit gradual suicide with our cigarettes.
Yet we want a clean environment, a balanced ecology, a stable population. The dimensions of the problem can be simply stated: it is a simple matter of life - or death. We live in one eco-system, on one planet; each of our actions affects that life system.
It is, of course, impossible for us to view our every action in terms of its relevance to the environment, but it is possible to understand the importance of our actions in relation to our environment. The importance of our learning cannot be overstated; if we do not learn, we have little hope.

TEXTO PARA RECUPERAÇÃO - 1ª SÉRIE MÉDIO

A friend of mine was traveling in the train and opposite him sat a gentleman reading "The Times". Every now and then he took a complete sheet of the newspaper, crumpled it up, opened the window, threw it out and shut the window. After he had done this two or three times my friend said: "Excuse me, sir, but I am most interested in what you are doing. May I ask why you do it?"
"Oh yes", he replied, "it keeps the elephants away."
"But", my friend said, "there aren't any elephants here."
"Of course not", came the answer. "That proves it works!"

TEXTO PARA RECUPERAÇÃO - 2ª SÉRIE MÉDIO

We humans have probed the heart of the atom, unraveled the mysteries of DNA, and glimpsed the edges of space and time. Yet when it comes to understanding life's place in the universe, we are mere children, standing on a beach, staring uncomprehendingly at a vast, inscrutable ocean. Our predicament is not that we know nothing about life; it is rather that nothing we know can be compared with anything anywhere else. Ali the creatures of the earth - from worms to whales - are fundamentally cousins, linked by the same biochemistry, sharing the same planetary home. But is the earth's biosphere the only one there is? So far none of the other planets or moons in our system has been shown to harbor life. However, given the vastness of the universe, the possibilities are endless.

TEXTO PARA RECUPERAÇÃO - 3ª SÉRIE MÉDIO

REASONS FOR LIVING ABROAD
Bob: I wonder why some people leave their native countries to try living in another.
Mary: Sometimes, it's for political reasons, other times, for economic ones.
Tom: Yeah... Or perhaps your job offers you an opportunity of spending some time abroad.
Mary: And, as Brazil has been going through economic and social upheaval, many Brazilians dream of moving to foreign parts to try out a new life.
Bob: Well, I quite agree with you. but I still think that Brazilians sometimes have a distorted view of what life is like abroad and are not prepared for everything they find.

Comparative and Superlative (2º anos CICDAMAS e CJAF GEO)

Confira a explicação abaixo:

Usamos o comparativo para comparar uma pessoa ou coisa com uma outra;

1 Adjetivos de uma sílaba;
2 adjetivos de duas sílabas
3 adjetivos de três ou mais sílabas.

COMPARATIVOS

Curitiba is smaller than Sao Paulo.
Curitiba é menor que São Paulo.

clean - cleaner
cold - colder
tall - taller

hotter, bigger, fatter, sadder, wetter.

Is an elephant heavier than a horse?

This car is more comfortable than that one.
Este carro é mais confortável que alquele.

expensive - more expensive
beautiful - more beautiful
handsome - more handsome
upset - more upset (duas sílabas não terminando com 'y')
boring - more boring (duas sílabas não terimando com 'y')

Note: Com alguns adjetivos de duas sílabas como (clever, common, narrow, pleasant, quiet, simple, stupid) podemos usar as duas formas:

cleverer ou more clever
commoner ou more common etc

SUPERLATIVOS

I have the smallest car.
Eu tenho o menor carro (de todos).

clean - cleanest
cold - coldest
tall - tallest

He is the heaviest
Ele é o mais pesado (de todos)

busy - busiest
pretty - prettiest
noizy - noisiest

Who has the most comfortable car?
Quem tem o carro mais confortável? (de todos)

expensive - most expensive
beautivul - most beautiful
handsome - most handsome

Irregular comparatives:

bad worse the worst
far farther the farthest
good better the best
Little less the least
Much, many more the most

Compare:

He has the most money = Ele é quem tem mais dinheiro.
She has the least money = Ela é quem tem menos dinheiro.

Nick Vujicic - An example of life.

Knowing a little about Nick Vujicic was something indescribable to our first day of class. I'm sure that when any of my students feel weak, unable to stand up again, they will remember this lesson and certainly will find the strength they are looking for to stand with dignity.

Personal Pronouns

Eles são I (eu), you (você), he (ele), she (ela), it (ele/ela/isso), we (nós) e they (eles).

My name is Mairo. I am a teacher.
Meu nome é Mairo. Eu sou um professor.

This is my father. He is a teacher.
Este é meu pai. Ele é um professor.

This is my mother. She is a lawyer.
Esta é minha mãe. Ela é advogada.

I have a blog. It is about English.
Eu tenho um blog. É (meu blog) sobre inglês.

I have a brother and a sister. They are Jorge and Mary.
Eu tenho um irmão e uma irmã. Eles são Jorge e Mary.

You are a student.
Você é um estudante.

My family and I live in a big city. We have an apartment.

Muitos estudantes ainda confundem he com she ou we com they.
